To say last Friday was a wash-out would be an understatement. While the evening was met with clearer skies, the Berlin Bathtub Races were unfortunately brought to a screeching halt by the wet weather last week. Fear not bathtub racers and enthusiasts, the Berlin Chamber of Commerce  is revving up for some fun-filled racing this Friday, July 19, with festivities set to begin at 5:30pm.

The Berlin Bathtub Races will celebrate their 24th year on Friday, as local businesses roll-out their finest tubs-on-wheels (works of art really) for some friendly competition. Each year, the Berlin Bathtub Races generate friendly, competitive energy for local businesses and excited anticipation for all who come to watch. Anyone is welcome to compete, and area businesses are strongly encouraged to participate in the 250-foot-long drag race.

For those of you scratching your heads and thinking, ‘what the heck is a bathtub race?’ here’s a few of the finer points. Teams provide and decorate their own bathtubs. Bathtubs must be able to hold a minimum of 2 gallons of water.  Each team must have at least one rider (helmets required!) with only one person pushing. Tubs must stay under the control of the pusher for the entirety of the race. Wheels are limited to 26 inches; however there is no limit to the number of wheels. Lastly – and perhaps most importantly – each bathtub must be equipped with brakes and steering.

New to the event this year is the Tub Challenge, providing racers with the bonus option of challenging another team to one-on-one, serious tub-rivalry.

Besides bragging rights and the “Winner Takes All” trophy, the first place business will secure themselves a free banner ad on the Berlin Chamber’s Website.

Teams – comprised of pit crews, a driver and a pusher – can find registration information at the Berlin Chamber of Commerce, or by calling (410) 641-4775. There is a $75 entry fee per tub for Berlin Chamber members and $100 fee for non-members.  As for spectators, arrive ready to cheer for your favorite business. And while you’re in #mdscoolestsmalltown , be sure to stop by some of the local shops and restaurants – The Atlantic Hotel, The Globe, Burley Oak Brewing, Baked Dessert Café, or the Maryland Wine Bar, to name a few.
