Up for a competition?

Ocean Games’ strives to bring the ultimate ocean sports experience to life, all for a great cause. Here at ShoreBread, we pride ourselves in bringing awareness to local charitable endeavors. Whether it’s something that hits close to home for us or we believe it’s something that will bring our community together, you can bet that we will write about it. Ocean Games is just that. The purpose of the competition is to raise funds for the Johns Hopkins Brain Rehabilitation Program and to shed light on brain injuries and the recovery process.

Ocean Games was started by local Corey Davis of Berlin, MD who suffered a motorcycle accident and was treated at Johns Hopkins and their rehabilitation center. It didn’t take him long after recovery to come up with Ocean Games, which includes a 9, 3 and 1 mile swims in the Atlantic Ocean, or as he describes, his backyard. There is also a paddleboard event. Also, expect to see the OC Beach Patrol and Coast Guard on the scene, as well as participating.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for people to challenge their abilities in open water, and bring awareness to TBI while promoting the positive effect sports have on the brain cognitively,” stated Davis.

The event begins Friday, July 18th at 6:00pm at the Ocean Pines Beach Club on 49th Street which offers a pre-race spaghetti dinner to all swimmers, kayakers & paddlers. Participants will also attend the mandatory 9 miler/kayaker safefy meeting presented by OCBP Captain Butch Arbin.

Come Saturday morning, bright and early, the fun beings at 8am. At 9am, vendor booths will open, with some local favorites like Walk on Water SUP and Quiet Storm. the 9 mile swim begins at 10am; the 3 mile race at 12pm; and the 1 mile race at 1pm. The SUP race starts at  10:30am for novice paddlesr and 11:30am for elite paddlers. From 11am until 4:30pm, enjoy live music at the bandstand at N.Division St. along with food and beverages. It doesn’t end there though; Seacrets will also be sponsoring a post-race party Saturday night from 5-8pm with live music and door prizes.

So come out for a great event and an even better cause.
