Seahawks Routed in Bayside Championship
BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s boys’ varsity lacrosse team ran into a buzz saw this week, falling to Kent Island, 15-2, in the Bayside Conference championship game on Tuesday.
The Seahawks fell to the Buccaneers, 19-6, back on April 26, but reeled off three big wins against Bayside South opponents in the last stretch of the regular season. Last week, Decatur beat Wicomico, 23-0, Bennett, 12-3, and Parkside, 16-0, in the regular season finale and appeared to have some of their swagger back after the disheartening loss to Kent Island.
The late run clinched the Bayside South for Decatur and earned the Seahawks a rematch with the Buccaneers in the conference title game in Easton on Tuesday. Once again, however, the deep and talented Buccaneers proved too much to handle for Decatur, which fell 15-2 on Tuesday.
Kent Island led 2-0 early, but a goal by Decatur’s Matt LeCompte in the second cut the lead to 2-1. Kent Island then ran off five straight goals to take a 7-1 lead into intermission. It was a pattern that unfortunately repeated itself for Decatur. The Seahawks scored the first goal of the second half to cut the lead to 7-2, but the Buccaneers again stacked together eight straight goals to close out the 15-2 win and the conference title.
There remains a strong possibility the two teams will meet again for the third time in as many weeks in the state 3A-2A East Region Section 1 playoffs Decatur earned the second seed and will face Parkside today at home in the first round. Kent Island is the top seed in the sectional and will face Bennett in the opening round.
