Ocean City Center for the Arts

Ocean City’s newest cultural amenity is the Ocean City Center for the Arts on 94th Street. This state of the art facility is the home of the Art League of Ocean City, the resort’s non profit arts organization.

After many years of fundraising to provide a venue for local artists to exhibit their original artwork and for people of all ages to have an art education center, the members of the Art League forged a partnership with the Town of Ocean City, the State of Maryland and Worcester County to build this brand new ADA compliant 7500 sq ft facility. Step into the building and you will find 2 galleries featuring artwork in all media including paintings, photography and 3D works. Note the gorgeous hand blown glass chandelier in the center of the galleries and the fun ceramic fish installation made by the children at Art Adventure Camp and glazed by the students of Berlin Intermediate School.

The Center for the Arts also features the areas only pottery studio where you can drop in to a class or open studio and learn how to throw a pot on a wheel. Upstairs houses five working artist studios where you can watch and interact with artists at work. Two more classrooms, an art library and a retail area for artisan works fill out the building.

The Ocean City Center for the Arts galleries are open Tuesdays-Sundays 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. Every first Friday of the month there is a public reception for the exhibit opening from 5-7 p.m. Complimentary refreshments are served and it is a great start to your evening on the town. The opening reception as well as all of the exhibits are always free and open to the public. A full schedule of art instruction for all levels as well as summer camp for kids is available on their website www.ArtLeagueOfOceanCity.org or call 410-524-9433. You can also follow them on facebook.

Every summer the Art League sponsors a Plein Air painting competition where artists come from all over to paint in the streets of the town. It is quite fun to watch, and the artwork is sold at a “wet paint sale” allowing visitors to bring home freshly painted scenes of their favorite resort.

Be sure to look for the displays of original artwork with local themes by Art League members when you visit the Ocean City Chamber of Commerce on Rt 50 and the Ocean City Visitors Center on 40th St.
