Deficit Problem

Editor:

Since the passage of the Congressional Budget Act of 1974, the Senate and House are supposed to pass a budget resolution in the spring of each year that sets the frame work for spending. The resolution sets out the general spending plans for the next four years. The last time a real budget was passed was in 1997. According to Politifact.com the last time a budget was approved was April 29th. 2009. It was technically just an omnibus spending bill to keep government running for a short period of time.

It certainly explains why we now have an unsustainable debt that continues to increase daily. This debt that we are presently faced with started to increase in the early 1940′s and has continued to grow every year to an amount now of over $17 Trillion dollars. Prior to the 1940′s we were always able to control the deficit by passing restraining budgets on the government.

Do you have any idea just how many countries we owe billions and to some trillions of dollars too? There are 35 listed nations along with 12 oil exporter nations and six Caribbean Banking Centers as published by the Department of the Treasury/Federal Reserve Board on July 16, 2014.

Don’t you think it’s about time the president, instead of running around making speeches to raise funds for a political campaign, might better spend his time trying to raise funds to reduce our deficit? Since he’s been in office the debt has grown to over $17 trillion. When he came into office at end of Bush’s term, it was $10.6 trillion. There will always be a danger of borrowing large amounts of money from abroad. The greatest danger is the effect it will have on our standard of living. If we don’t decrease the deficit foreign investment will decrease causing a weakening of the dollar resulting in increased interest rates. The most important element needed to decrease the deficit is a strong economy. The International Monetary Fund recently stated that the U.S. economic growth this year will be the weakest since the Great Recession. That doesn’t sound good. I think it’s time to wake up America before it’s too late.

OC Needs Span

Without Drawbridge

Editor:

The catastrophic closing of the Route 50 bridge two weeks ago is proof positive that the intended replacement should not be another drawbridge (as currently planned by the State Highway Administration) but, rather, a high bridge. In addition to tourism, public safety demands it.

For all the friends of Betty Dolan, who corresponded with me or her family during her illness, I want to say thank you so much. The phone calls, cards and prayers were all relayed to her and were received with a warming smile.

We will have many fond memories as she travels on her “Sea of Love.”
