Weekend Happenings: Burley Benefest, Cruisers, Somerset Strawberry Festival and More!
Hello sweet weekend! Well, almost. It’s time to start thinking about your weekend plans at least, and as always, we are presenting you with an eclectic mix of events to enjoy across Delmarva, from Cambridge to Rehoboth and everywhere in between. From classic cars in Ocean City and Berlin, to a night of camping at the Salisbury Zoo with the kids, to amazing shopping deals in Dewey and Rehoboth, we’ve found something for everyone to enjoy this weekend. And with another fantastic weather forecast, we encourage everyone to get outside to explore the shore. Enjoy!
Cruisin’ OC
When: May 14-May 17
Where: Ocean City Boardwalk and Convention Center
What: The sound of engines revving and the sights of classic cars cruising up and down Coastal Highway are quite common for May in Ocean City. Each spring and fall, the cruisers roll into town for the classic car show, which includes live entertainment, celebrity guests, special attractions, boardwalk parades, vendors and more. Show hours are as follows: Thursday-Saturday, 9am-5pm; Sunday, 9am-4pm; at the Inlet, 10am-1pm.
The Doo Wop Project
When: Thursday, May 14, 8pm
Where: Ocean City Performing Arts Center
What: Tickets are on sale now ($25-$25) for an evening of legendary songs from starring cast members of Jersey Boys, Motown the Musical and more. Call or visit the Ocean City Box Office for tickets (410-723-8601) or Ticketmaster at 800-551-SEAT.
Bunk with the Beasts
When: Friday, May 15, 6pm-9am
Where: Salisbury Zoo
What: It’s that time of year again – the Salisbury Zoo invites you and your little ones (ages 4 and older) to join them for the Bunk with the Beast Camping Adventure! The overnight event includes a cookout, guided tour, fun activities, animal encounters, a night hike through the Zoo, and a continental breakfast the next morning. Educational and fun, campers need only bring their adventurous spirit, tents, sleeping bags, and flashlights. The cost is $20 per person. There will also be a select number of tents for rent for $25.
32nd Annual Spring Sidewalk Sale
When: Friday, May 15-Sunday, May 17, 10am-8pm daily
Where: Rehoboth Beach & Dewey Beach, including Downtown Rehoboth, Dewey Beach and Route 1
What: The Rehoboth Beach-Dewey Beach Chamber of Commerce is hosting their 32 Annual Spring Sidewalk Sale, with a weekend of deals and bargain prices in Downtown Rehoboth and in shops along Route 1 in Rehoboth and Dewey. Visit the Chamber website for more details.
Southern Delaware for Nepal
When: Friday, May 15
Where: Participating restaurants in Southern Delaware
What: In an effort to raise money for the residents of Nepal who were affected by the recent earthquakes, 15 participating coastal restaurants will be donating a portion of their sales from the evening of May 15 to Save the Children, an organization providing relief to the region. In addition, the Matthew James Haley Trust and the Carl M. Freeman Foundation will also be donating funds to the cause. For a list of the participating restaurants, click here.
Somerset Strawberry Festival
When: Friday, May 15 (5pm-9pm) & Saturday, May 16 (9am-4pm)
Where: Marion Station, MD
What: The Somerset Strawberry Festival returns this weekend, with two days of activities and fun, including tug-of-war, Little Miss/Mister and Junior Miss pageants, free berries, parades, the Phil Rayfield Memorial Run & Walk, and the Blue Ribbon Baked Goods and Jams & Jellies Contest. Plenty of family-fun and kids activities both Friday and Saturday.
Cause for Paws
When: Saturday, May 16, 10am-1pm
Where: Humane Society of Wicomico County
What: The Humane Society of Wicomico County is hosting the 21st Annual Walk for the Animals. The event will include contests, vendors, prizes, and of course, adorable dogs!
St. Michaels Running Festival
When: Saturday, May 16
Where: St. Michaels
What: Now in its 4th year, the St. Michaels Running Festival offers runners three options, a half marathon, 10k, or 5k, each taking place in one of the oldest waterfront towns on the Chesapeake. The event also includes a 1k fun run for children under age 12. The day will also include live entertainment, delicious food, and complimentary beer for runners. Maryland Avenue Rain Garden Planting Day
When: Saturday, May 16 @ 9am
Where: Maryland Avenue, Cambridge
What: Volunteers are invited to be a part of Cambridge history this weekend for the planting of the first rain gardens on Maryland Avenue. Native plants and ground cover will be on site and ready to plant. The event starts at 9am but will last most of the day, so volunteers are welcome to show up in shifts. Shovels, gloves, and water cans are encouraged. The rain gardens will help absorb runoff and reduce water along Maryland Avenue.
Art in Bloom Floral Competition
When: Saturday, May 16, 3:30pm-8:30pm
Where: Art League of Ocean City
What: See floral arrangements inspired by the artwork on display. Designs will be unveiled Saturday and remain on display through the weekend. Enjoy demonstrations and activities celebrating springtime!
Berlin Spring Cruisers
When: Saturday, May 16, 10am-2pm
Where: Downtown Berlin
What: Ocean City isn’t the only place to view classic cars this weekend, Berlin celebrates their annual Cruisin’ event with a host of amazing classic and custom cars on display. Don’t forget to stop in some of our favorite shops and restaurants while you are visiting Berlin!
Burley Benefest
When: Saturday, May 16
Where: Burley Oak, Berlin
What: The crew at Burley Oak seriously knows how to throw down for an event. Beyond being purveyors of delicious craft beers, they are also notoriously talented at selecting quality live music. Enter the first annual Burley Benefest. Tickets are $40 with 100% of your ticket costs going towards building someone a home right here in Worcester County though Worcester County Habitat for Humanity. There are only 250 tickets being sold for this event so act now. “You can help build a home for someone right here in Worcester County for a simple donation of $40. With that donation you get to drink all of the Handcrafted Goodness (beer) that can can responsibly consume” Burley Oak Manager Nicky Chavis wisely pointed out. The event also includes plenty of activities like giant Jenga and Twister, and a cornhole competition.
