Worcester Boys Edge Jags, 2-1, For Title
BERLIN- Worcester Prep’s boys’ varsity soccer team edged Salisbury Christian, 2-1, last Friday to capture the ESIAC tournament championship.
Last Wednesday, the Mallards beat Holly Grove in the semifinals, 3-2, to advance to the ESIAC championship game. Owen Nally, J.B. Loomis and Brian Trupo each scored single goals as Worcester advanced to the ESIAC tournament final against Salisbury Christian on Friday. The Mallards scored early and late to win the conference championship.
With 21 minutes remaining in the first half, Ryan Nally faked a shot and slipped a pass through the defense to J.B. Loomis, who then found Jack Marshall open. Marshall fired a shot past the Salisbury Christian keeper to give Worcester a 1-0 lead. Salisbury Christian scored on a corner kick to tie the score at 1-1 in the second half.
Worcester took the lead for good on a nice assist from Owen Nally to Ryan Nally, who fired a low shot to the right corner to put the Mallards ahead, 2-1. Worcester keeper Isaiah Nsah was outstanding all day, recording 13 saves. With under 30 seconds left, Nsah made one of his biggest saves of the day, diving to stop a shot to the upper corner to preserve the 2-1 win and the ESIAC title.
