Did you know that October is National Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog month? It’s no secret that ShoreBread has a soft spot for pups of all sizes, shapes, colors and breeds, but we have a particularly special spot in our hearts for shelter dogs. Year-round we work to donate to our area shelters either through donations of food, money, toys and clothing, or by attending the numerous fundraisers that are held in our community.

Locally, the Worcester County Humane Society is dubbing the month of October as “Celebrate Me Home” month with an abundance of adoption events and numerous opportunities to visit the dogs at the shelter, Petco, OC Pet Spa and more. The shelter celebrated some amazing news earlier this month as they announced that from March 1, 2014 to September 30, 2014, out of the 176 animals turned into the shelter, 173 had found their forever homes. As a result, the shelter has been able to assist other shelters, pulling rescues from High Kill shelters.

In conjunction with Adopt-a-Shelter-Dog Month, the Worcester County Humane Society will be holding an Open House on Saturday, October 25 from 12-2pm. All are invited to come visit the cats and dogs available for adoption. There will also be light refreshments served, t-shirts and magnets for sale, and music provided by EJ Foxx from the Wave. The shelter is also calling October, “Celebrate Me Home” month in an effort to encourage anyone who has adopted a pet from the shelter to bring them back for a visit. A shelter reunion of sorts!

The Worcester County Humane Society is also currently holding their 4th Annual WCHS Cash Raffle, with a first place prize of $3000! Chances are $5 each or five for $20. The drawing is December 6th and all proceeds will benefit the animals at the shelter.

The Worcester County Humane Society is a non-profit, no-kill shelter servicing all of Worcester County, including Berlin, Ocean City and Ocean Pines. As a non-profit, no-kill shelter, the Worcester County Humane Society relies primarily on donations from the public. The shelter provides food, vet care, and unconditional love to all of their animals in residence until they are able to find a suitable, loving, forever home for their animals.

We realize that ShoreBread encompasses more than just Worcester County, so we strongly encourage you to reach out to your area shelters to find out about local adoption events and fundraisers, along with ways that you can help keep your local shelter running efficiently.
